I am planning to go to Iceland next week and I haven't booked anything (I know). It seems like there are a lot of options for driving tours through different companies but I am a bit confused about what to do.

Normally I use private tours through the various hotels I stay at during my trips but in Iceland the accommodation options are not great (no 5 star hotels and in some places no 4-star hotels) so I wonder if I would be better off doing a Guide to Iceland tour or something similar with their highest level of accommodation as they will take care of tickets, itinerary and lodging.

Does anyone recommend a company for a 10 day self drive tour? I see there are also guided tours with a driver as well (don't know if I could handle 10 full days with a guide though...I like to get the executive summary not the entire history).

The worst tour I ever did was Norway in a Nutshell so I am a bit anxious about trying something different.
