I recommended to people to make a VM of their Win7 or other installs - if they were still using them and then run the upgrade on the win 7 VM and get it to 10 for free. I've been using both for nearly a year now with no problems. AT least at that point you have a system upgraded for free and don't have to worry about paying 125$ in the future. You'd have to migrate data to the new system on win10 if you haven't used it for a while but that is easily done. Also, most VM providers allow a 30 day trial so you can make and authenticate the VM for free.
