One thing to remember - all the rental car companies in Germany are a LOT stricter about damage than in the US. Basically, when you pick up the car, go over it closely, and make sure any damage that you'd note if you were picking up a new car from the dealer is noted on the damage form.
I would ask first what the minimum size is e.g. for scratches that they consider it as damage.
