One thing to remember - all the rental car companies in Germany are a LOT stricter about damage than in the US. Basically, when you pick up the car, go over it closely, and make sure any damage that you'd note if you were picking up a new car from the dealer is noted on the damage form.
Never had a rate with a retention while full insurance without retention is normally subject to an extra charge in Germany. So they try to find damages if you booked with retention. I never book without and always tell them when I give it back. They immediately stop watching
