Yes they try that routine at Nairobi too, at the Xray on entry to the terminal. My reply is always "it's an eticket" and they then take look at my passport. Works 100% of the time.
Most of these places it's a pointless exercise anyway. Arrived at Nairobi on Friday with visa application form and immigration card, the lady chucked them both into a huge pile without a second glance and put the visa sticker in the passport.
