SJC is generally quite pleasant, though gates can be kind of a crapshoot. I've been lucky and had most flights go out of Gates 26/27/28, which are right next to the Terminal B security checkpoint. However, when I was there last I had an SJC-SAN go out of Gate 14, which is much, much closer to Terminal A's checkpoint than Terminal B.
Fortunately, I didn't have to check a bag so I could go directly to the Terminal A Security Checkpoint, but I think something has to be done with the gate configurations there so that things make a little more sense. Check the app for gate assignments to see which entrance is most convenient.
I was once told that SJC had intended to install moving walkways throughout Terminal B, but these were scrapped due to cost.
It's true that there were supposed to be moving walkways and they were scrapped due to cost along with some additional gates. The B security checkpoint is supposed to be at the center of the terminal when it is complete. SJC can have some long walks.
It could be worse, my other half flew AS to gate 16 and saw the general signs directing her to baggage claim for Terminal A and was waiting for her bag there. Oops.
