So I've managed to secure 2 CW tickets now but there were only 2 CW redemption tickets available either way.

For the 2nd companion ticket, availability in other classes disappeared. I can buy Y on the way out and W on the return. If I purchase this now, and W should become available nearer departure, can I upgrade using avios? And will the 2-4-1 companion ticket still be valid that I'll only need the avios value or one upgrade in order for both tickets to be upgraded?
