I've had an AA gate agent at JFK grab my wheeled bag and check it in as I was boarding with it. My bag would not fit the sizer, but never had a problem in years with it fitting in the overhead bin. Since that experience I now have a bag that is slightly smaller and will fit in the sizer if questioned.
