So Male is nice, but we do also want to do some activities, and she would like to see London. Normally, Male wouldn't be a typical place we would want to go/visit, as we like to be out and about. But we both agree (and now that I've told her) that it seems like paradise to just drop everything for a couple days and not do anything (except snorkel). But after 3.5-4 days of that, we'd probably get a little board.
So I hear your point about spending a third of it traveling. It just seems like a good way to get a bit of both of what we want (she's also pretty excited about the flying, I showed her some videos of the Frankfurt FCT and car rides).
What's going to be most important is that we keep talking and decide on what makes the most sense, which again is easier said then done as this probably won't happen for ~2 years from now.
You indeed have lots of time to figure this out, which is great.
I assume when you say "Male" you mean the Maldives, but just in case: From what I've read ahd heard, Male, the capital of the Maldives, is not a place you'd enjoy passing through. Unless their flight schedules don't permit other arrangements, most folks land in the airport on a neighboring island, then transfer to their flight or boat that their hotel arranges for them. They don't pass through Male at all.
Beyond that, don't underestimate the degree to which jet lag can crimp your energy, sleep patterns, etc. when you first get to the Maldives. Yes, you'll be experiencing this all in a gorgeous setting. But still, I'd suggest at least five or six nights there to truly settle in and enjoy it.
As for the long trip getting there: I fully agree that it can be a wonderful start to the vacation if you're in F or even in J.
