To be honest with you, during my 4 passages at JNB last May/June only a AF 77W was seen which surprised me, but a LH 748 was there too a couple of times instead of the usual whale (for the winter season?)...

No worries, the lounge upgrade occured quite recently in November 2014! and prior that, yup you are correct, nothing really enjoyable

It is odd, but it's also true - AF/KL lounge closed in March (iirc), and as of two weeks ago no sign of any renovation work or anything. AF/KL are using SLOW lounge, but flying on KQ with STE I couldn't find any lounge options...
KQ has been using the Bidvest lounge for a while. Unfortunately check in agents tend to omit too often the directions, prior March you could go to both (far from each other though) without any restriction.
