Be prepared to have to collect your bags, clear customs and recheck with AA checkin landside. Probably the transfer ability varies with your specific airline into HKG and security level at your airport of origin plus the world security situation that day. Fwiw, transfer to AA is much less likely than transfer to CX for example, as AA tends to require security check ... I'd say 99% sure you will need to go landside. Tight on time, so be quick.
