As a ski nut, during a business trip to SYD, a mate and I drove down for a day of skiing. Other than the novelty of snow in australia, it was unimpressive. Agree w bensyd above- just hills, not dramatic mountains. But hey, DID ski in Oz!

Until the late 70's or early 80's you could actually drive your car right to the top of Kosciuszko, which kind of tells you what sort of "mountains" you're dealing with.
That being said, in summer it really is beautiful up there. There are plenty of paths on the main range, plenty of wild flowers and very few people. It's a great place to do a bit of hiking.
