LeMeridien was created in the 70s as the hotel division of Air France. Most locations were in traditional AF markets, although one example of a US property was LeMeridien San Francisco, opened in 1984 (the hotel that is now called the Park Central). The brand did not come into Starwood until about 2005.
There's a LM in Minneapolis that was an independent boutique hotel beforee joining Starwood.
One aspect that's supposed to distinguish LMs/LRMs is a connection to art. At many of these properties (Minneapolis, Barcelona, and Shanghai for example) not only is there art throughout the property, but your keycard is also good for free admission to some interesting local art gallery.
