A friend/colleague could purchase a prepaid SIM 'starter kit' on your behalf and arrange to deliver it to you shortly after arrival (i.e. leave it at your hotel), informing you shortly after purchase (but before your departure from the US) of the actual number. The number is generally printed on the inside of the packaging.
