If you really want to get to Stansted you can get there in under 2hrs by train for around £24 rtn pp. Check out www.qjump.co.uk .

Alternatively, you could visit one of England's other cities. Gatwick has excellent direct coach connections to Oxford (2hrs, £22 rtn pp) and Cambridge (<4hrs, £32 rtn pp).
