It is not uncommon on ANC-SEA flights to watch people rush the boarding area and be allowed to board prior to an individual's seat, etc. Plenty of MVP folks queue up properly. When announcement for disabled or families with children under 2, I often see perfectly able people board (and with no kids). GA need to control the crowd!
It's exacerbated by the fact that most ANC-SEA flights are very elite heavy. I've seen the F wait list on this route at over 60 people fairly routinely. So the gate agents calls for elite boarding and half the dang gate area tries to get on the plane. Combined with the issue that the gate agents rarely, if ever, enforce boarding rules and you get the Southwest effect of old.
I've said many times before that AS needs to join the rest of the modern airline world and move to zone boarding, with said zone clearly marked on the boarding pass, and enforce it. It would make the whole process much less stressful.
