I believe flights ex-NZ (including connecting flights) cannot be hit by fuel surcharges so you might have just lost that saving, though I thought that only applied to tickets originating in NZ which yours doesn't.
You might be able to price up the old/new trip on matrix.itasoftware.com and view the fees there but if you have a lot of legs it may require some fiddling. Care to post the full rtw (including stops >/<24hrs)?
With pleasure (I was about to start a trip report anyway

. x= transfer <24h;; / = stopover >24
Old itinerary:
CPT - JNB x JNB - HKG / HKG - SIN / SIN - SYD / SYD - AKL / AKL -SYD x SYD - HNL/ HNL - PHX / PHX - BOS / BOS - LGA / LGA - MIA / MIA / YYZ / YYZ / LHR / LHR - DXB / DXB - LHR / LHR - CPT
New itinerary:-
CPT - JNB x JNB - HKG / HKG - SIN / SIN - SYD / SYD - OOL/ OOL -SYD x SYD - HNL/ HNL - PHX / PHX - BOS / BOS - LGA / LGA - MIA / MIA / YYZ / YYZ / LHR / LHR - DXB / DXB - LHR / LHR - CPT
Literally the only change is the replacement of AKL by OOL. I will try and price it on Matrix - thank you for suggesting that. It won't of course matter what the fares are as the taxes will be the same I suppose if I put the same classes of travel in...
Meanwhile (this is irritating me a bit

) I have done some research of my own. According to the OOL airport website their per passenger charges are as follows, assuming that my flight out counts as international because I am transferring in SYD to a flight in the US:-

LAGS (Liquid Aerosols and Gels) $2.18
CUTE (departing only) $0.27
Domestic passengers are charged slightly less.
And according to Wikipedia (so appropriate caveats) HM Australian Government charges a flat tax of A$55.
This does not add up to anything remotely resembling £300, even post Brexit! And that would be assuming that Her Majesty of New Zealand is sufficiently keen to receive tourists that She levies zero taxes and Her airports make zero charges.
I repeat that I make no suggestion pending closer examination that this is overcharging but I think I am entitled to an explanation of what is at first glance a massive difference.
