Idyllic setting, shame about the (lack of) service
Introduction (For clarity, our party of total four had two separate rooms booked - both by different diamond members, and in different names; both for one king bed resort view).I stayed for 5 nights on a standard redemption at this property in July 2016. I am a HH Diamond member. Check In The check in staff looked bored and certainly didn't look to go out their way to treat Diamonds well. There was no Diamond queue, and we waited around 5 minutes. The other room was checked in at the desk, and upgraded to a king room in the Tapa tower on the 27th floor, again partial ocean view. For one room, we pre-checked in using the eCheck in system to a partial ocean view on the 12th floor of the Tapa tower. We did this as we preferred two double beds.Unless you're in the premium Ali'i tower, check in is at an outdoor covered section next to the drop off zone. It is big with around 15 desks - after all there's 3,500 rooms here. Room The view straight out the room:By turning left out the balcony, you can see our partial ocean view. The Tapa tower is in need of refurbishment, although the room was large enough and functional for our needs, it would really benefit from a new carpet and a lick of paint. The bathroom could do with a renovation. Every night, our room was subjected to the barrage of noise from the Luau show (which looks terrible!). Service Pretty poor on the whole to be honest. I didn't have much interaction with staff, but where I did I was left feeling disappointed. For example, they closed the pools one day but didn't explain why (and re-opened them after about an hour); and they ran out of towels at one of the pools another day. HH Diamond recognition They give you coupons for two waters - once during the stay; and Internet here is a free-for-all via an exorbitant resort feel; and no, there isn't a premium speed for diamonds. As for breakfast, instead of breakfast they give a $10 per person per night credit towards a few of the eateries in the hotel, a far cry short of the $32 breakfast buffet. I personally recommend the $17 breakfast buffet at Dukes. They certainly tried fairly hard to ignore status. I suppose I should be pleased with a room with a partial ocean view as an upgrade, but when you're standing next to people at check in who are getting much nicer rooms in much nicer towers - like the Rainbow and the Ali'i - on paid space available upgrades (which aren't available on redemption bookings) you feel let down. Location It's superb. The hotel has its own little village; they have parrots and turtles on site; the pools (in particular the paradise pool - and slide) are superb. I just love walking down the ocean front to the other shops and restaurants Waikiki has to offer. Overall A great location; but get ready to stump up cash if you want a nice room or breakfast, even if you have HH status. My tip is to remember the Kalia pool on the 4th floor of the Kalia tower if you're looking for a quieter spot to sit.
