Really? This comment beggars belief. I seriously question the agenda and motivation of someone that would suggest that.
I've had a few bags 'lost'. The response by airlines and handling agents varies BA were actually a bit better than others.
It's a pretty unpleasant experience and happens far too often.
Suggest that you
(a) compile a detailed list of items that were in the bag including their value. Especially identify anything that might may be a bit different to all the other mishandled bags that they manage to loose so that it's easier to pick out.
(b) provide a very good description of the bag so that it can perhaps be more readily identified
(c) provide a list of items that you have purchased as a result of their negligence and say you want reimbursement and you will be making a claim and publicising this event.
