I've checked an umbrella before... at check-in checked. They put it in a plastic bag, then put the bag in a plastic bin. The bin is what they move around. I'd say safer than on the bottom of a bin where pax slam luggage ontop.

I've also checked a tiny box... hmm, a magazine. Random-sized boxes. I want to try a "marble" one day.

Oh, I understand the value of this. Day trip, meetings... I realize OP is on longhaul, but I don't think they care about umbrellas.
