I have brought a golf-sized umbrella as carry-on on LHR to YVR flights three times in the last three years and will be doing so again in a week. Never a problem, it gets sent through the scanner with all the other carry on and it fits in the larger overheads without a problem. In fact I then bring it in YVR to YYJ.
