We can still get to VCE via LHR or MAD, but it means 2 connections and more time. I've been researching the alternative routes obsessively for the last week. Fortunately we have miles in enough different programs to have multiple choices, I just wasn't sure whether to give up on the beautiful 1-stop routing.
Train leaves the airport around 11 am, arrives in Venice around 3:30 pm. Direct train stops briefly in Rome, Florence, Bologna and Venezia Mestre before arriving in Venezia Santa Lucia (last stop). High speed trains in Italy are very efficient. You can buy tickets online in advance at discount. Good luck with your plans.
