They're not going to wait 10 months to rebook you; if the flight was cancelled, AA will offer rebooking alternatives well before then. It would help you to find acceptable alternatives on oneworld partners that you could suggest to AA -- for example, PHX-LHR-VCE, which shouldn't be a problem to be rebooked on without a surcharge.
