HHV is a love it or hate it place, many of us love it and have settled on it after trial and error staying at other places, but it's not for everyone.

I never worry about upgrades because I book the exact room type I want, always (Ali'i Tower, ocean view), and I don't think the breakfast is "lame" because there is no "breakfast" - you get a (I think) $10 pp pd value, so you can get a coffee at Starbucks or go to the buffet, your choice, you just know you're just getting that dollar amount. Some used to complain that the real Gold/Diamond breakfast was "lame" when it was in the lounge in the Rainbow Tower, so they can't win.
I would prefer booking the exact room type I want too. A potential upgrade is too unreliable, especially for a location where I care about the view.

All the other diamond benefits are just nice to haves.
