Since the counter agents at AA scan my passport thru their card reader, I have assumed that the info is shared with the federal government.

Can't be too careful. Think of the children. I'll bet the 3,000+ victims of September 11 wouldn't have minded it. They'd gladly trade their freedoms for a return of their lives.
