I only book Exit Seats on long haul flights - in Europe I like to keep my bag or at least my jacket (with wallet, phone etc) within reach.
In my Experience, LX usually lets you keep the folded jacket or iPad on your lap, 4U is really bad (...) when you can't even have a pen with you.
