calling international is easy: you can obviously use your mobile or home phone, but chances are this will be expensive. (easy but expensive). If you use Gmail, you can make calls through the desktop app, for 1-2 cents per minute..just charge your google account up with $10 (slightly more difficult). Look on the lefthand side, it should say "make a call", click on that or the phone icon. Or, create a Skype account and download Skype (similar to Google). Finally, you can get Google Voice, and install it on your phone which will basically override your carrier if you choose. This will make it seem like you're calling from your regular phone, even though you're using the same technology as gmail/skype/etc. (somewhat complicated for folks who aren't tech savvy, but definitely the most useful if you need to dial internationally and are price sensitive).

International protocol is to add the "+" symbol before the country code. So Hong Kong would be +852 (8 digit #), USA/Canada +1 (10 digit number), etc.

Or, you could change your carrier to Google Fi (instead of ATT, Verizon, TMobile, etc) and all calls like this are 1-2 cents a minute anyway.
Thanks guys, I will look into Skype and Gmail over wifi.
