No one knows for sure yet.
My guess: there will be an intermediate point in the merger process where MR and SPG will have "awareness" of each other. What exactly that is, nobody knows yet. My hope is that by 2017 you could provide your choice of an SPG number or an MR number to any hotel in the combined system and - at a minimum - earn points/stays and have your elite status recognized. It'd be nice if you could also redeem across the brands, but I'd settle for earn and recognize status. Then, in 2018 or so, it becomes truly one program.
In other words, your Naples problem might not be a problem in a few months. But none of that is for certain, and it isn't in place right now.
