No, I think it's just "your time". Sooner or later, bad luck like this catches up with you - law of large numbers. Where an airline screw up is really bad. On the flipside, I have had really positive AA experiences. It's just inconsistent, which is frustrating.
I think you're doing the right thing, proactively trying to back out of the ticket, and being polite but firm. I would also ask them to document each call in the notes, so that it is well noted that you were proactive in trying to cancel the ticket.
