EC261 mandates that the airline has a duty of care for you in the event of delays or cancellations regardless of the reason. See post #2 of this thread for more details http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...61-2004-a.html

Compensation is the part that is reason dependent, and wouldn't be payable for weather as in your situation.
