Agree with desidivo, you'll need gold first, then you have unlimited same-day changes, which are extremely valuable. I once was in IAH flying back to SFO, but I had a business meeting pushed back 3 days, so I used SDC to change it to the next flight essentially for 3 days. I probably got super lucky with this (only time I've ever done this), so YMMV.
