People don't fly on J for work with these sort of crazy schedules and not knowing the cancellation rules. Corp travel agents & other co-workers would know you can't do this.

OP is flying business, but didn't fancy the direct DUB-LAX flights on Ethiopian or Aer Lingus so booked a DUB-LHR-LAX and knew enough to book an overnight stay at LHR instead of the 6:40 a.m. DUB-LHR to make it a bit more bearable.
OP was in North America, but decided to fly to London for a night and then turn around and go back to Los Angeles instead of just buying a domestic flight in the U.S. and paying a change fee to push the JFK-LHR leg to a future date. (or flying direct from JFK to DUB)
OP paid for his/her own flights. Otherwise the logical response is to call the company travel agent and explain the screwed up itinerary and get it sorted out professionally.
Is OP a novice Tier Point runner, as we all sort of assume? Yet one who didn't know you have to fly all flights in order? I recall booking an ex-EU over 15 years ago for somebody and saying "make sure to take that first flight in Paris because your ticket will be cancelled otherwise". So this is hardly a new invention.
My sympathies for the very expensive lesson, but a few of us are obviously quite curious as to how anybody could end up in such a situation so hopefully the OP can find some time to explain it a bit better.
