Between Hong Kong and Japan lies Taiwan.

It isn't mainland China or Hong Kong, but it's full of Chinese culture, including the National Palace Museum of art and artifacts that Chiang Kai-Shek and friends brought over from the mainland in 1949, has food from every province, and offers some spectacular scenery as well.

It's a short flight from Japan, especially if you leave from Fukuoka.
