But at least TSA updated a lot of the equipment at current airports, even if the equipment isn't the best. At least TSA keeps the equipment up and running better then the airlines did to.

Thats what I've been saying all along. So privatizing it with TSA overseeing would reduce the costs by billions. The taxpayer would be "less fleeced" than the Flyer. We all know that the private sector, in general, can run a company much better than the Guvmint with less waste, reduced prices (not $800 for a toilet seat rather $8.00).
TSA is doing nothing above/beyond (security wise) what the private screeners did to make us safer from terrorist. Bomb sniffing machines excepted. As some have pointed out it was the "Ailine's" policy of cooperating with hijackers that resulted in Sept. 11th not security policies.
The TSA is an insult to the traveling public. Grandma/Grandpa excepted...
