I have seen security people trying to open laptops without success. They probably do not own a laptop, so they have no clue how to try and open one as most types are different. They seem to think that force is the answer, instead of asking the owner. Arrogance at its best.

Glad they are going to pay for your damaged laptop, but it probably does not negate the inconvenience to you caused by the damage. They should fire the person who did it.

Stuff gets broken once in a while. People don't get fired for that. It's accepted that accidents will happen from time to time. From my experience most screeners I know are quite good at opening various types of laptops although I prefer to have the owner do it if possible. Most incidents I've witnessed of items getting broken at the point have been passengers' faults. It's much more common to see a passenger accidentally drop an item then a screener.
