In my experience the priority tags do have a benefit at some out stations (in addition to any special handling when loaded). At IAD or DXB for example, the ground staff proactively pull tagged bags from the carousel and arrange them in a "premium bag" area. It may only save a few steps but the intent is clearly to differentiate the service.
IME, at IAD, they just appear to pull bags off th carousel to avoid it being comgested. I've never seen a 'priority bag zone' ... I just always had to search for our bags amist the growing piles! Whether they were prioritized or not, I have no idea ... all I know is I rarely ever had to wait long (post-Immigration) to get our bags.
