As an Australian who has always had to have a signature done, and pictures verified by someone who has known me for more than 2 years, I find the idea of passports that can be signed at any time slightly frightening.

IMHO, there is not much to sort out. Your friend attempted to travel with invalid Syrian passport. At this time of everyone scared of terrorism and uncontrolled migration into EU, I think LH did the only sensible thing and correctly denied his boarding.
