Codeshares are a bit deceptive but UA did tell you at booking and on the receipt the flight was "Operated by Air Canada" -- it's there. It just may not mean anything to most people. Note -- all airlines do this, not a UA unique thing. Elites pay a lot of attention to this since their benefits can vary - especially in economy.
