I think some posters are seriously underestimating the number of people affected by this change. There are many reasons why passengers can end up withmultiple pnrs / bookings / tickets, whatever. They know that they have always just taken them all to check in and BA have through checked their baggage. They may not have known the "rule" before, they do not know the "rule" now - they will still be booking as they have before, with no knowledge or concern about the need to reclaim and recheck bags.
Absolutely agree wth this and that BA need to publicise the change, and it's appalling they implemented it retrospectively.

But to be absolutely clear, I wasn't saying above that people know the difference between the the policy on one vs two bookings. I was saying that they plainly do know whether they have one booking or whether they have two bookings. Ergo, the basic change in policy as regards one booking vs two bookings (ignoring the ticket subtleties) is not at all difficult for passengers to understand:

>> one booking = bag checked through and protected
>> two bookings = bag not checked through and not protected
