Yeah, right, probably Switzerland gave him a multiple entry Visa for Schengen (and didn't mind him actually going there twice, and returning back!) on an "invalid Syrian passport".
Let me tell you this again:
Germany has UBER-strict requirements for Passports, as long as you want to legally go there, or even just transit there. Like as passport needing a signature, when many countries do NOT have this mandatory.
Lufthansa, as a German carrier, need to go along with that law. So they check according to that law. That's fine. When in Rome..
But yeah, I was told I shouldn't "bash Lufthansa" earlier, when I suggested that if you've a "a passport that might attract attention" that it might be a better idea to choose to fly on other carriers..
Fact is, like it or not, German passport checks are among the most strict in the world. My suggestion was to fly Non-GERMAN carriers - flying NOT via Germany, ie just avoid Air Berlin as well. This is an issue about Germany, not about Lufthansa
Of course only as long as their Chancellor doesn't decides it would be a great idea to let millions of undocumented people into Europe.. (while still keeping their ultra-strict checks on someone well known to the Schengen system..)
Again, technically Lufthansa was apparently correct in denying him boarding. They can't change the rules Germany put opon them.
Greetings to Frau Merkel.
