I have not rented a car in Bali but did hire a car and driver fir 10 hrs for $65 CDN. The driver spoke great English, was very knowledgeable and the car was clean, new and comfortable. Methinks it is better to do this than self drive. I even kept the drivers card for future reference!
This is generally the best advice.
We just decided that we wanted full freedom to explore on our own on our time schedule, and felt that hiring a driver would diminish the adventurousness and privacy that we were looking for.
