Maybe dates back to a time when DELTA and SWISS or one of its former incarnations were working together.
It was Swissair https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swissair that had the accident and then became Swiss Airlines International in 2002. Swissport works with various airlines and is part of the Swiss Airlines Group and manages airport operations such as Ground, Catering and Counter Staff as well as Lounges.

Here is an article from Aviation Weekly from December 1993 about the Delta/Swissair/Austrian Codeshare renewal. Apparently Delta had Codeshare on the Washington IAD-Geneva flights back then.

I hope this helps clear up any confusion. Swissport can work with other airlines as Delta outsources their operations to Swissport just like LSG SkyChefs(Lufthansa Sky Group) for airlines like Delta. They do not need to be part of the same Alliance.

For instance Swissport handles the Ground Operations at SJC airport in San Jose CA.

If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask me.
