I agree with all you said, except this. It depends on the hotel and culture. We had balloons, rose petals, a personalised cake at an Aloft for a birthday. We had a photo taken and framed, a box of sweets and chocolates, the bed wrapped up like a present at a lowly Sheraton. And zilch at a LC and StR. Not even a welcome card.
