All applied upgrade instruments would vanish. The refund of the older ticket and upgrade instruments is dependent on the fare conditions. If the upgrade was non-refundable, then LH was right. You did the reissue voluntarily.
I've made changes in the past to legs on UA and UA upgrades on unchanged legs always "stuck." In fact, my UA upgrade to SFO-FRA stayed with the reissue. So which one is out of the ordinary - UA or LH?
