It seems to me when I first made the reservation, I was able to log in and assign myself seats and then when I checked a few weeks later, I couldn't. And then again, a few weeks after, I was able to log in to seat selection so, maybe there's an IT problem that comes and goes?

Thank you for your inputs - far more useful as it shows there are indeed some sort of issues whether it is IT or intentional blocked we dont know yet, versus someone just assumed I had no clue on what I was doing. I only post because I have already tried every perceivable way but unable to open up the seat map and I said so in my initial post. This is quite similar to what CX had implemented last year that only OW elites could select seats more than 6 months out. When I first encountered that issue, nobody in CX or AA forum realized that as those who responded claiming A OK were all OW elites. Being lowly Ruby we dont get that benefit.
Back then one could use QR site to by pass the block. Looks now QR site is also blocked from access. If this is intentional, then CX is stupid - this would only add to the work load to the call center. CX could choose not to sell award seats to the partners instead. Yet, CX obviously could not give up that money based on the occupancy we saw on our flights, especially in J. On our return HKG-LAX exactly a week ago, the J cabin was less than 1/2 full. 5 in the mini, and may be 15 to 20 at most in the main. Yet there were only 2 award seats for sale based on BA site. (I went to check since I could not access seat map, so I anticipated an almost full flight - quite the opposite!)
