Spiff...in a perfect world everyone could be counted on to do the right thing. We would have no need for screening of anyone, no need for police officers or a military either. Sadly, we do not live in that world so we must take precautions to ensure that people do the right thing. Now, as for "random harassment," I know all too well how you feel about secondary screening and I do agree with you. If all airports had the new extremely sensitive magnetometers in place by now, then that practice would disappear under the weight of the number of shoes setting it off. So maybe you should lobby for these to be installed quicker than they are and get your biggest problem solved.
