I'd like to know what kind of car the OP had. It's becoming more common for cars to not come with a spare tire, but rather only with the sealant and air compressor to inflate the tire.
The last Elantra I rented didn't have a spare, and I don't even recall seeing a can of sealant. But it did have the compressor. I know some of the Nissans are coming without spares as well.
