'technical' stops maybe not - but stops in China where pax disembark, clear immigration, and continue on the same plane/flight number, 'yes'. The problem is that these stops aren't always indicated on the ticket or itinerary and sometimes require a bit a searching.
Not sure if those flights are as common now, and as you say, not really applicable to LHR or TYO.
