One last thing- check the travel coverage on your Visa card. Knowing you could do something for yourself via insurance reimbursement adds a bit of 'peace of mind' control. Usually the last resort option as the airline should assist but be armed and aware always works for me.

You would probably still need to make a call- the unlimited calling one month subscription on Skype is C$10. Not sure if you can buy it month to month but worth a quick look.
