I agree that it's too far out. This is something I'd do a couple days before the flight.

However, whether it's worth it depends on what the flights are.

The last time I really planned alternatives was HKG-YVR-SFO. I couldn't miss the YVR-SFO (it was the last of the day), so I planned alternatives if my HKG-YVR was delayed.

However, if you're flying LHR-YYZ-YOW, and there's an hourly YYZ-YOW flight, is it worth asking in LHR to rebook you to the later one? Maybe, but I'd probably leave it until I arrive.

As far as I know, it's only for North American itineraries.
